"Ghost of Christmas Past" Official Press Release
Brina Kay’s New Christmas Song Comes with a Haunting Twist
Nashville, TN. – Nashville singer and songwriter Brina Kay released her new single “Ghost of Christmas Past” at midnight on Saturday, October 31. Produced by Mike Anderson, a Nashville-based composer and producer, “Ghost of Christmas Past” is currently available on most streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, AmazonMusic, etc.)
“Ghost of Christmas Past” was co-written by Kay, Anderson, and fellow artist and songwriter Olivia Frances. The song is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale “A Christmas Carol” and tells the story of a girl whose holidays are haunted by the memory of her lost love. The trio wrote the song around Halloween last year.
“This is not your typical Christmas song,” said Kay. “It’s got a dark and sinister theme, and we added a lot of spooky elements to the production. I think there’s a lot of pressure on people to be happy during the holidays, but in reality, it can be a stressful time, especially if you’re going through a breakup. My hope is that anyone who might not be having an ideal holiday season at least now gets to have a song that relates to their feelings.”
“Ghost of Christmas Past” is also the first song Kay and Frances had ever written together.
“Mike introduced us the night we wrote it,” said Frances. “So not only does the song capture the Christmas and Halloween spirit; it also captures the spirit of Nashville and the magic of the songwriting community here.”
Anderson describes the song as a mix between Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and “Nightmare Before Christmas”
“We wanted a Christmas song that didn’t sit inside the traditional definition,” said Anderson. “The vibes are creepy and haunting, yet the story told through the lyrics feels quite relevant. This song embraces the distant edges of creative songwriting, and I see it as a delightful ending to a dark 2020.”
Now that the song has been released, Kay plans to begin production with Anderson on five new songs for her debut EP, which is being funded by fans after the singer ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for the project in March.
